Rocking Horse Assignment

I’m not sure what to put in the orange boxes on the first sheet.

Let me begin with what has already been given, to make sure you understand that part.

  • In the first column labeled Material Purchased we have listed what can be bought at the store.  The first item listed is a 12 foot 2×4.  That means a piece of wood that is 2 inches by 4 inches and is 12 foot long.
  • In the second column is the Cost of the material purchased.  In this case, $9.45.
  • In the third column is the Usable Unit of the purchased item.  One rocking horse will not require the entire 12 foot long 2×4.  (Looking ahead in C12, you can see that it will only take 10 feet of 2×4.)  To determine the cost of each rocking horse, we first are calculating the cost of each linear foot of the 2×4.  Then we will use this per unit cost to determine the cost of a single rocking horse, based on the number of units needed (in this case 10) to make the horse.
  • In the fourth column, we are listing the number of usable units (column 3) in the purchased item (column 1).  For the 2×4, we are breaking the 12 foot long piece into feet, so there are 12 usable units in the purchased material.
  • In column five, we are calculating the cost per unit.  We know the cost for the whole 12 foot item is $9.45.  To find out what the cost is per foot, we divide 9.45 by 12 and get $.79.

Based on this discussion, what do you think the entries should be for E4, E6, E7, E8, and E9?


How can I search for answers to the exam in the electronic textbook?

  • Type keywords or phrases from the question in the search box in the top left corner.
  • Scroll down on the left for promising passages from the text.
  • For any promising passages you find, click on the chapter / section link.
  • Hold the CNTL and F keys at the same time.
  • Type your key words or phrases again in the box that appears.
  • Hit ENTER.
  • Click the textbook page on the right.
  • Hold CNTL and hit G over and over to jump to the places your keyword or phrase is mentioned in the text.

I’m worried about the exam.  Can you tell me more about it?

You will have three hours to take the exam.  There are no performance questions, only multiple choice and true false questions about your textbook readings.


I need some help with Access.

Why would I want to limit values entered for a field in my database?  How can I accomplish this?

Data entry would be more consistent, if the choices were limited to specific values.  This video shows you how to make a lookup field.

How do I create a form in Access?

To create a form for a given table, single click the table.  Then click the Create tab.  Then click Form.  You will want to save the form before closing the database.

Would you please give me a suggestion/reason for creating a form?

A form in Access gives employees a way to enter data into an Access table without accidentally altering the table.  For example, using the form, one would have the ability to enter new records, alter previously existing records, and delete records, but would not be able to delete fields.  An employee, for instance, would not be able to delete the first name field, which would adversely affect ALL records.  Specifically, all first names would be lost for all records in the table.

Can you please explain what you mean by tables, forms, queries, and reports.  Are these in Access or Word?

Tables, queries, reports, and forms are all items found in databases.

You create queries in Access to search your database and find the answers to questions.  If you watch the video I created for you called Creating reports on group totals, you will see that I create a query before I create the report.  First I create a query, called Most Popular Destinations, which answers the question of which destinations are most popular among the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, and Desert Museum.  After that, I create a report which displays the information in an attractive format.

In Access, a form provides an alternative means to enter records in a table.  The form for a table keeps the table structure safe, so that the person entering data can only enter new records and edit and delete previously existing records.  The person entering data cannot alter the table itself in any way.  For example, no fields can be deleted by accident.

I’m not sure how to best format my Excel spreadsheet.

I am confused about what I need to submit when for the discussions.

You need to post an initial response to the discussion question by Tuesday of the week the discussion is assigned.  Then you need to post responses to two of your peers by Saturday of the week the discussion is assigned.  If you missed posting your initial response by Tuesday, you still can post it by Saturday.  You’ll just get a deduction for submitting it late.  After Saturday, the discussion no longer will be available.

I purchased the book, but how do I access it to read it?

You can read it online by clicking the Access E-textbook link in our Blackboard course.  It is on the menu on the left after you log into our class.  Follow these steps to access your book.

  • Go to the publisher’s web site by clicking the link.
  • If you are not already logged into the publisher’s web site,
    • Enter your e-mail address and password on the top right, then click the Login button.
    • A window will pop up.  In it, click the Read your book online now button.
  • Otherwise, if you are logged in already,
    • Click your name in the top right.
    • Click Information Systems: A Manager’s Guide to Harnessing Technology, v. 1.4.

I do not have the book yet.  What should I do?

Getting Started

I’m not sure which assignments are due this week and how to access them.

The assignments you need to do this week are listed in the schedule.  In Blackboard, click Schedule on the left.  Then click Click here for Schedule.  You will see that, in addition to the discussion on FreshDirect (section 2.1 of your e-text, questions and exercises #6), you need to answer six questions on Porter’s five forces and the music industry (section 2.4, questions and exercises #1 and #4-8).

I want to update my profile picture, but I’m not sure how to do this.

Follow these steps to update your profile picture.

  • Click the generic face next to your name in the top right.
  • A drop down menu appears.  Click the generic face again.
  • Click the Edit My Blackboard Profile button on the left.
  • Click the Change Picture button.
  • Click Upload New.
  • Locate your picture on your computer.
  • Click the Open button.
  • Adjust cropping, if desired.
  • Click the Change Picture button.
